What My Journey To Indonesia Taught Me

During the summer of 2025, I was lucky enough to take a two-week trip, with my family, to Indonesia. This journey was an unforgettable experience - not only because of the beautiful country and culture itself, but also because of the valuable lessons learnt in time management and immersion.

About Indonesia:

We visited three islands, spending around five days on each, where we toured cities, countrysides and nature's beauties. Each destination offered something unique, providing us a glimpse of Indonesian lifestyle. Furthermore, we were fortunate enough to have knowledgeable local guides on each island, who connected us with others and introduced us to traditional customs and foods, such as Nasi Goreng (their national dish). Everyone we encountered were incredibly hospitable and open, allowing us to not only explore the sites but also to gain a genuine understanding of the local life.

Challenges faced:

As there were eleven of us travelling together, coordinating plans and keeping track of everyone was no easy task, especially with our packed itinerary that ranged from morning hikes to late night dinners. Soon enough, it became clear that we needed to improve our planning and coordination skills if we wanted to balance the varying energy and interests of our group.

We overcame this by prioritizing what we wanted to do most as a group. We also became more flexible with our plans, realizing that there are times where we need to step back and enjoy the moment. There were days where outings were spontaneous, such as long meals with locals or unplanned stops at hidden locations. Funny enough, those impulsive moments became the highlight of our trip.

Lessons Learnt:

Learning to manage time during a busy family holiday taught me far more than how to plan a schedule; it strengthened skills that I continue to use personally and professionally. Coordinating a large group required clear organisation and communication. Balancing everyone's needs and wants helped me develop patience, adaptability, and consideration. On a professional level, these experiences mirrored real-world teamwork and project management - understanding different perspectives, managing time under pressure, and ensuring goals are met efficiently.

Going to Indonesia was more than a getaway; it was a lesson in culture, connection, and community. I left with memories, new insights, and a deeper understanding of how time management allows us to truly enjoy every experience.

Thank you for reading; I hope this reflection offered some understanding of how simple events can lead to lasting lessons. I look forward to sharing more in the future.
